Spring Water vs. Drinking Water vs. Distilled Water

Are you choosing the right water for its intended use? You may not have given a second thought to what type of water you’re ordering as you shop for residential or commercial delivery; after all, all water is the same, right? Spring water, drinking water and distilled water are all popular solutions for Puritan Springs customers. While appearing the same, these types differ in terms of how they’re produced and how they’re used.

What’s the Difference Between Spring Water & Drinking Water?

As the name implies, spring water is water that has been drawn from natural springs, which are sourced from underground aquifers. Generally, spring water is already considered purified when it’s been drawn, having been filtered through glaciers while retaining its natural mineral content; this water is typically rich in calcium, magnesium, and potassium. After spring water has been drawn from its natural source, it’s tested and analyzed to ensure safe consumption, then bottled and sold.

Drinking water, on the other hand, is spring water that’s been taken a step further. Puritan Springs drinking water is drawn from an aquifer 200 feet underground, then treated with two dependable purifying techniques: reverse osmosis to remove most of the minerals, and then deionization to eliminate the smaller particles. This two-step process results in delicious drinking water with a ratio of 1 part-per-million of minerals to hydrogen and oxygen.

What is Distilled Water?

Distilled water, on the other hand, is water that has been purified of all contaminants and additives, including 99.9% of minerals. Produced by boiling water into steam and recondensing it back to a liquid in a separate container, distillation purifies water down to its two core elements — hydrogen and oxygen — resulting in the purest form of water available.

What Kind of Water Do I Need?

Deciding between drinking water, spring water, and distilled water comes down to how that water will be used. Like drinking water, spring water is 100% safe for human consumption — some even report it’s the best-tasting water on the market — but can also be used for a variety of other domestic uses, including cooking and cleaning. In fact, many customers report spring water to be their favorite organic water.

While distilled water is also safe for consumption, customers will find the taste to be flat or even bland because of the missing mineral content. However, because of its purity, distilled water is perfectly suited for use in residential appliances (like your CPAP machine, for example) that may otherwise accumulate mineral content after many uses, as well as commercial and industrial uses like cleaning and sanitizing, and medical, dental, and veterinary applications
